Turning tourism emissions data into action with ChristchurchNZ
12 Christchurch operators. 6 weeks. A guided journey from guesswork to a data-driven sustainability plan, with practical insights to reduce operational costs.
The Challenge
ChristchurchNZ's destination management plan puts regenerative tourism front and centre for the region. Together with standards like Qualmark, the plan meant local operators needed reliable, accessible emissions data, not just estimates. The problem was that most simply didn't know where to start. They understood why sustainability was important, but had no practical way to measure it, or to fully understand their impact. As Brian Townley, Manager of the Pavilions Hotel, put it, "operators needed to move past assumptions and get an actual baseline to work from."
The Solution: Automated Measurement, Made Collaborative
ChristchurchNZ partnered with CarbonTrail to deliver their Climate Action Accelerator - a six-week carbon measurement program designed to help tourism operators measure their emissions and turn the results into practical action.
The programme combined CarbonTrail's AI powered software with hands-on support from people who understood both emissions measurement and the Regional Tourism Organisation landscape.
For James Brickland, ChristchurchNZ's Destination and Experience Coordinator, that combination of technology and practical expertise was key to choosing to partner with CarbonTrail.
Rather than working in isolation, the 12 operators worked through the challenge together. Businesses with very different visitor mixes compared notes and solved problems side by side, an approach Brickland credits as one of the program's biggest wins.
Less Time, More Insight
Emissions measurement can quickly become time-consuming, particularly when businesses are left to collect and organise data manually. CarbonTrail removed much of that effort by integrating directly with accounting platforms such as Xero, turning what’s normally an overwhelming experience into what Aaron Carpenter of Quest on Kilmore called a "light touch" process.
In just six weeks, the Accelerator cohort progressed from rough estimates to activity-based, audit-ready data.
That granular data didn't just satisfy a reporting or certification requirement, it surfaced real opportunities for reduction and improved business practices. For Carpenter, the numbers highlighted issues such as contaminated recycling, landfill waste, and electricity use - uncovering hidden costs and sparking immediate conversations about supplier relationships and in-house process changes.
The Results
At week six of the Accelerator, audit-ready data showed Christchurch's operators already performing strongly against international benchmarks:
- Hotel Emissions, 35.57 kg CO₂ per room night. These figures were right in line with the 35–40 kg global industry benchmark, giving a solid baseline to build reductions from.
- Tour providers, 5.71 kg CO₂ per guest. These figures were well below global averages, demonstrating that the cohort's tour activities are likely to be efficient.
Please note that these results are unverified, and represent a low sample size. Do not use these as representative comparisons for reporting purposes.
Building for the Long Haul
By pairing intuitive software with expert facilitation, CarbonTrail turned a daunting exercise into a genuine growth opportunity for Christchurch's tourism sector. It proved to be a highly effective solution for a sector looking to drive region-wide sustainability initiatives.
As David Ermen, Managing Director of Destination Capacity, and course facilitator, put it, “what the operators learned about their own businesses and as a group, would have been much more difficult to achieve without the Accelerators’ consistent measurement method and guided process to identify solutions . This has empowered them to make significant longer-term changes in their operations and has given the region better data to develop support programmes for the future.”
For the participants, the payoff went beyond good PR. As Townley emphasised, the platform's ease of use was what got the whole team on board. It gave these businesses the tools and baseline they needed to track, monitor, and keep improving for years to come. Measurement wasn't the finish line, it was the starting point for real business transformation.
For ChristchurchNZ it was mission accomplished. The sector had captured quality emissions data and set a benchmark for their long-term destination management plan. As Brickland put it, “it more than achieved our goals, it’s provided our operators with high quality benchmark data and given them the tools and insights to drive and monitor improvements”
